Responding to disasters
In the event of a natural disaster, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation supports immediate emergency relief efforts, with a focus on the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene services for the affected populations. The Hilton Foundation is also interested in addressing the often neglected medium- and long-term recovery needs of communities impacted by the disaster. The Foundation places no geographical limits on the support it provides for natural disaster relief and recovery.
Since 1991, the Foundation has awarded $21 million to support relief and recovery programs following international and domestic natural disasters (cyclones, earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis) and other tragedies (the Oklahoma City bombing and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001). In all of our disaster response work, the Foundation emphasizes the importance of following internationally accepted standards and best practices.

Hurricane Katrina / New Orleans recovery (2005-2010)
The Foundation provided $6 million in grants for relief in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and has provided $4 million in grants to-date to support the recovery of New Orleans.
- $1.5 million went to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, which set up a special account on behalf of the Greater New Orleans Foundation to receive funds for New Orleans hurricane relief.
- Hilton Foundation grants of $2.5 million and $1 million went to The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, respectively, for the coordination of immediate relief across the region.
- In addition, we awarded a $1 million grant to the Foundation for the Mid-South toward that foundation's Hurricane Katrina Recovery and Restoration Fund, which it developed to help nonprofit organizations along the Gulf Coast.
- In August 2007, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation joined a group of national foundations led by the Rockefeller Foundation in providing $2.5 million to the Community Revitalization Fund of the Greater New Orleans Foundation to strengthen the affordable housing sector in New Orleans, increase housing production, promote smart growth principles, and build the Greater New Orleans Foundation's ability to respond to future challenges.
- Also in August 2007, the Hilton Foundation contracted with the Initiative for Regional and Community Transformation to research opportunities for grantmaking in three key areas related to recovery: early child development, homelessness, and small enterprise development. Based on this research, we directed recovery grants of $228,000 to UNITY of Greater New Orleans, a collaborative that provides housing and multiple services for people experiencing homelessness, and $1.3 million to the United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area to support the Bridge to Quality Program, designed by the Greater New Orleans Rebuild Child Care Collaborative to help rebuild quality childcare centers that meet requirements for the 2007 School Readiness tax incentives.
