Past disaster relief and recovery work
Bangladesh cyclone response (2007)
In 2007, Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh causing large-scale evacuations and thousands of deaths. The Hilton Foundation responded by providing grant funding to Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen (Aviation Without Borders), an organization that partnered with BRAC (the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) to transport and distribute much-needed relief supplies to the Bangladeshis affected.
Pakistan Earthquake (2005)
Following the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Pakistan in October 2005, the Hilton Foundation sought to fill gaps in emergency assistance—in particular, providing shelter and relief supplies, and addressing the needs of women and children.
- The Foundation supported Save the Children to meet the needs of earthquake-affected families.
- With the Himalayan winter approaching, the Foundation also supported efforts by Islamic Relief to construct immediate and long-term shelter for people whose homes had been destroyed, ultimately providing shelter for 1,500 families following the earthquake.
Tsunami response in Indonesia (2004)
After an earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a devastating tsunami in 2004, the Hilton Foundation helped bring emergency supplies to Sri Lanka and Indonesia through grants totaling $1.1 million. In partnership with SOS Children's Villages International, the Foundation facilitated the provision of shelter, medical care, mental health care, and sanitation services in the immediate aftermath, as well as for the recovery.
With support from the Hilton Foundation, 2,260 family houses and 20 multi-purpose community centers were constructed; seven SOS Children's Villages were established; and new boats were provided to fisherman.
